The Ashworth Letter Box

Image of the month – May

Did you ever think what a great invention the post box is?
You can just drop your letter into it and know that it will be collected, transported and delivered anywhere on the planet! The letter box on this stamp is unique; it’s over 150 years old and was probably introduced to Ireland by the novelist Anthony Trollope who worked for the Irish Post Office as a surveyor. Before post box design was standardised, there was scope for some local variation and that’s why this one is a one-off. It’s currently on display in our museum in Dublin’s GPO and if you post a card in it, you get a special Museum postmark.
